Xú Family Dùnmù Táng
📍 Address: 40 meters west of the intersection of Huilì Street and Càishì Street, Wucheng District, Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province
🏛️ Historical Background
Xú Family Dùnmù Táng was originally constructed during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties as a ancestral hall for the Xú family of Wuzhou. With over 300 years of history, its name derives from the concept of "fostering kinship and harmonizing the clan," reflecting the family’s ethical values and traditions. It underwent restoration during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty and still preserves Qing-era steles and family genealogies—making it a significant physical testament for studying clan culture in central Zhejiang and Ming-Qing architecture.
🪵 Architectural Features
The complex follows a classic southern Jiangnan courtyard layout, facing south with a north-south orientation, consisting of three main halls and two side wings, covering approximately 320 square meters. The main hall, named Dùnmù Táng, spans three bays with a raised beam wooden framework, a gabled roof covered in blue tiles, and intricately carved eaves. Decorative paintings on beams and lintels remain visible. The entrance gate features exquisite stone carvings themed around “Hundred Sons” and “Fú Lù Shòu” (Fortune, Prosperity, Longevity), symbolizing auspiciousness. The courtyard is paved with pebbles, and the central skylight includes a stone drainage channel, demonstrating the harmonious blend of traditional fengshui principles and practical design.
🏺 Cultural Relics and Remnants
Inside the hall are preserved fragments of the Xú Family Genealogy from the 28th year of Guangxu (1892), several ancestral tablets, and a restored replica of the original “Dùnmù Táng” plaque. A stone tablet inscribed with “Filial Piety and Righteousness as Family Heritage” is embedded in the wall of the main hall, recording acts of charity and aid by the Xú family ancestors—offering valuable historical insight.
📜 Cultural Significance
As one of the better-preserved Ming-Qing family ancestral halls in the Wuzhou region, Xú Family Dùnmù Táng not only preserves the bloodline memory of the Xú clan but also reflects the traditional values of the central Zhejiang countryside—reverence for ancestors, adherence to ritual propriety, emphasis on education, and moral integrity. It stands as a rare and invaluable resource for studying southern Jiangnan ancestral hall systems, familial ethics, and local social structures.
