🏛 Historical Origins
Nestled in the heart of Mingjiu City—the cradle of Chinese baijiu culture—Mingjiu Museum traces its origins back to the "Mingjiu Workshop" established during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty. It is the only surviving site that fully preserves the traditional brewing systems from the Ming and Qing dynasties, representing a state-run distillery with continuous historical lineage. According to the Annals of Mingzhou: Records of Labor and Craft, this workshop once exclusively produced imperial-grade wines for the royal court, earning it the renowned reputation: “North has Maotai, South has Mingjiu.”
🏘 Architectural Style
The museum is built into the hillside, adopting the classic architectural style of Ming-era southern China, characterized by blue bricks, gray tiles, upturned eaves, and ornate gables. It seamlessly integrates Huizhou-style wood carvings with Suzhou-style colored murals. The core structures are the "Niangchun Hall," a reconstructed area replicating ancient brewing workshops, and the "Cangjiu Pavilion," a dedicated exhibition space showcasing rare wine storage artifacts. The courtyard layout follows the traditional arrangement of “workshop in front, warehouse behind, ritual altar on the left, storage on the right,” reflecting the cultural philosophy of balancing ritual tradition with industrial practice.
🏺 Artifacts Collection
The museum houses over a thousand precious cultural relics, including:
- Ming Dynasty ceramic wine jars (National Grade III Cultural Relics)
- Qing Dynasty fermentation starter molds and brewing tools
- Wine vouchers and handwritten ledgers from the Republic of China era
- Original sample of top-tier Mingjiu from the 1st National Wine Evaluation Conference in 1953 (officially archived)
Among these, the “Stone Stele of the Third Year of Wanli” stands as a rare original land deed from a historical brewing workshop. Its inscriptions meticulously document brewing formulas and sacrificial rituals, holding exceptional value as historical documentation.
🌿 Cultural Significance
Mingjiu Museum exemplifies the holistic integration of Chinese wine culture—embodied in ritual, craftsmanship, artistry, and philosophy. It systematically presents the complete production chain, from grain selection and starter preparation, to distillation and barrel aging. In 2018, it was designated a Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, and in 2022, it was selected as one of the “China Industrial Heritage Tourism Demonstration Bases.”
