Description

Huangying Community, Mingguang City 🏘️

Located 40 meters southwest at the intersection of Chih River Avenue and Jiu Xiang Li Lane in Mingguang City, Anhui Province, Huangying Community is one of the better-preserved traditional villages in eastern Anhui, embodying the agricultural civilization and ancestral culture of the Huai River region since the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Historical Development

Huangying Village was established during the Chenghua era of the Ming Dynasty (1465), named after its status as a settlement of the Huang family. In the Qing Dynasty, it served as a post station along a vital grain transport route, with the "Huangying Pu" station functioning as a key transit point between Fengyang and Xuyi. During the Republic of China period, it was the seat of the first district of Mingguang County, witnessing significant changes in local administrative structures.

Architectural Features

The existing cluster of ancient residences features typical characteristics such as blue bricks and gray tiles, horse-head walls, and intricately carved wooden window lattices. Most buildings follow a three-part courtyard layout, with approximately 32 structures dating from the late Qing Dynasty to early Republican era still standing. Among them, the Huang Clan Ancestral Hall (built in the 23rd year of Guangxu’s reign) is designated as a municipal cultural heritage site. Its stone-carved gatehouse displays intact motifs of “Fulu Shou Xi” (fortune, prosperity, longevity, and joy), and the painted beams and rafters inside remain clearly visible—making it a crucial physical testament for studying folk architectural art in eastern Anhui.

Cultural and Historical Significance

  • The ancestral hall houses a fragmentary copy of the Huang Family Genealogy (1789–1949), documenting clan migrations, imperial examination achievements, and relief efforts during disasters;
  • Ancient copper coin caches from the Ming Dynasty and ceramic shards from the Qing Dynasty have been unearthed in the village, reflecting historical commercial activities;
  • Traditional customs such as the spring "She Festival" for praying for a bountiful harvest and autumn ancestor worship are still practiced and have been listed on the Chuzhou City Intangible Cultural Heritage Register.
