🌿 Historical Origins

Moshan Temple was originally established during the Zhen Guan era of the Tang Dynasty (627 CE), making it over 1,300 years old and one of the oldest surviving Buddhist temples in eastern Fujian. According to the Zhouning County Gazetteer, it was initially named "Pujie An" before being renamed "Moshan Temple" due to its location at the foot of Moshan Mountain. The temple has undergone numerous cycles of destruction and reconstruction throughout history; the current structures largely date back to renovations carried out during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, preserving a classic layout typical of southern Chinese Zen Buddhist monasteries.

The temple faces south with its buildings constructed along the natural slope of the mountain, covering approximately 3,500 square meters. Its overall design is strictly symmetrical and follows a central axis. Key structures include:

• Hall of the Four Great Heavenly Kings: Three bays wide with a gabled roof, adorned with intricate dougong brackets and finely carved decorations;
• Great Buddha Hall: The main hall housing a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, with Ming Dynasty-style painted beams and rafters inside;
• Sutra Pavilion: Houses several dozen hand-copied manuscripts and fragments of the Qing Dynasty's Dazangjing (Great Buddhist Canon);
• Bell and Drum Towers: Positioned on either side of the main gate, their distant bell tolls are among the famed local scenic attractions known as “Morning Bells of Moshan.”

📜 Cultural Relics

• Two Tang Dynasty Stone Lions: Standing at the entrance, these lions exhibit a simple, ancient style and represent early Buddhist sculptural art in Fujian;
• Qianlong Emperor’s Inscribed Plaque: “Ciyun Pufu” (a replica; the original is housed in the provincial museum);
• Group of Stele Inscriptions: Seven steles from the Ming and Qing dynasties are preserved within the temple grounds, recording the temple’s historical development and biographies of eminent monks—of significant historical value.

Moshan Temple is a vital center for the transmission of Zen Buddhist culture in eastern Fujian and once served as a key teaching hub for a branch of the Linji School. The temple regularly hosts religious ceremonies and meditation retreats, maintaining traditional rituals. Its architectural craftsmanship, mural artistry, and religious texts offer irreplaceable academic insights into the evolution of Buddhism in southeastern China since the Tang and Song dynasties.
