Description
Shangduizhuangshi Village Dragon King Temple 🏯
📍 Address: West side of Zhaoqi Pet Training and Boarding School, Tiexi District, Anshan City, Liaoning Province
🕰️ Historical Origins:
The Dragon King Temple in Shangduizhuangshi Village was originally constructed during the mid-Qing Dynasty (circa 18th century), representing a typical example of folk religious architecture in southern Liaoning. According to local chronicles and inscribed stone tablets, the temple was built by villagers to pray for favorable weather, protection of river transport routes, and safety in fishing activities. It served as a key node within the "Five Dragon Deities" worship system, reflecting the religious life of agrarian and fishing communities along the northeastern coast from the Ming and Qing dynasties through the Republic of China era.
🏛️ Architectural Features:
The existing structure is a single-eaved hip-roofed brick-and-wood building, measuring three bays wide and one bay deep, with a total area of approximately 45 square meters. Above the main gate lies a stone tablet inscribed with “Dragon King Temple,” its characters weathered but still legible, bearing the inscription “Established in the 12th year of Jiaqing, Great Qing.” Inside, five deities are enshrined—Green Dragon, Yellow Dragon, White Dragon, Red Dragon, and Black Dragon—each crafted in colored clay sculpture, exhibiting a simple, rustic style characteristic of northern folk art. In front of the hall stands an incense burner platform, flanked by two commemorative steles from the Daoguang and Tongzhi periods, detailing the temple’s history and listing donors who contributed to its restoration.
🏺 Cultural and Historical Value:
- Two inscribed stone tablets serve as invaluable physical evidence for studying folk beliefs and local social structures in southern Liaoning;
- Original ritual objects such as bronze bells and ceremonial flags have been lost, though some fragments are preserved at the local cultural museum;
- Listed in the Anshan City Register of Immovable Cultural Relics in 2019, it is recognized as a municipal-level protected cultural site.
📜 Cultural Significance:
As one of the few dragon temples in Northeast China dedicated to the “Five Dragons,” this temple possesses unique regional characteristics in both architectural form and ritual practices. It embodies the local people’s reverence for natural forces and their pursuit of harmony with nature—a philosophy rooted in simple, enduring wisdom. Despite centuries of exposure to wind and rain, the temple continues to carry the collective memory of the community, serving as a vital vessel for the preservation of rural cultural heritage.
