Description
Guanyin Hall 🏯
📍 Address: Inside Dafosi Temple, No. 1-13 Qianshan Road, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province
Historical Origins
Guanyin Hall was originally constructed during the Xianping era of the Northern Song Dynasty (998 CE), one of the earliest core structures within Dafosi Temple. It underwent major renovations during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with its current main structure dating back to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. Today, it stands as one of the most well-preserved Buddhist halls in the Fuzhou region. The hall enshrines a towering bronze-gilded statue of the Eleven-Faced Guanyin, crafted in the Ming Dynasty, standing approximately 2.8 meters tall. With solemn and compassionate features, this statue holds exceptional religious and artistic significance.
Architectural Features
The hall faces south with its back to the north, featuring a single-eaved hip-and-gable roof covered with blue tiles, soaring eaves with upturned corners that convey grandeur and majesty. It spans three bays in width and two in depth, with intricately painted beams adorned primarily with dragon-and-phoenix motifs and lotus patterns, rendered in rich, dignified colors. Three stone steps lead up before the hall, flanked by a pair of Ming Dynasty stone lions whose craftsmanship is simple yet powerful, exuding an imposing presence. The ceiling's coffered vault is decorated with murals depicting "Heavenly Palaces and Towers," which, despite aging, still reveal traces of their former splendor.
