Gao'an Ancient City ๐Ÿฏ

๐Ÿ“ Address: 100 meters west of the intersection of Jinxiu Avenue and Yongding North Road, Gaian County, Langfang City, Hebei Province

๐Ÿ“œ Historical Evolution

Gao'an Ancient City was originally established during the Taihe period of the Northern Wei Dynasty (477 AD), boasting over 1,500 years of history. It stands as one of the better-preserved ancient county-level cities in northern China. Since the Sui and Tang dynasties, Gao'an has long served as a subordinate county of Zhuozhou. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it became a key city south of Beijing, earning the esteemed title of โ€œFirst County of the Capital Region.โ€ The city underwent multiple renovations, particularly on a large scale during the Jiajing and Wanli periods of the Ming Dynasty and the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty, culminating in a fully developed defensive system.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Architectural Layout and Remaining Remains

The original city was square-shaped, with a circumference of approximately 4.8 kilometers and four gates: Dong Yingchun (East Welcome Spring), Xi Laiyuan (West Come Far), Nan Chaoyang (South Face the Sun), and Bei Gongchen (North Arch Celestial Pillar). Key surviving relics include:

  • Southern City Wall Ruins: About 300 meters long, constructed with rammed earth, with remaining height of roughly 6 meters, featuring visible Ming-era brick facing;
  • Site of the Bell and Drum Towers: Located at the city center, now serving as a landmark plaza; originally the core of the Ming and Qing official administrative complex;
  • Great Hall of the Confucian Temple: Rebuilt during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, five bays wide with a single-eaved hip roof; intricate painted beams still preserved;
  • Two Ancient Wells: One is known as the โ€œMoon-Gazing Well,โ€ traditionally believed to have been dug in the Tang Dynasty, with fresh and sweet water.

๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ Cultural and Archaeological Significance

  • Excavated artifacts span from Han to Qing dynasties, including pottery, bronze coins, and stone inscriptions; among them, the fragmentary manuscript of the Gao'an County Annals from the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty is designated as a provincial-level precious cultural document;
  • The cityโ€™s layout embodies the philosophical concept of โ€œharmony between heaven and humanity,โ€ conforming to the architectural standards described in the Rites of Zhou: Kaogong Jiโ€”โ€œa square nine-li with three gates on each sideโ€;
  • Provides tangible evidence for studying ancient administrative divisions, military defense systems, and folk culture in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
