Description

The Later Two Villages Mosque 🕌

📍 Address: Houliangjian Village, Jianchapu Town, Xushui District, Baoding City, Hebei Province

Historical Origins

The Later Two Villages Mosque was originally established in the mid-Ming Dynasty (circa 15th century), making it one of the earliest mosques in the Hubei region serving a Hui ethnic community. According to records from the "Houliangjian Village Chronicles" and local stone inscriptions, its founding is closely linked to the Ming dynasty’s early “migration policy for Hui Muslims,” built by Hui ancestors who settled in this area. With a history spanning nearly 600 years, the mosque has undergone renovations during the Qing Dynasty and repairs in the Republican era, and was rebuilt in the 1980s through collective contributions by villagers. It preserves the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties along with enduring Islamic cultural elements.

Architectural Features

  • West-facing orientation: Aligned according to Islamic prayer direction, with main structures arranged along a central axis
  • Brick-and-wood construction: Walls built of blue bricks, timber roof trusses using the cantilevered beam system, tiled roofs with gray tiles, and colorful paintings beneath the eaves
  • Entrance Gatehouse: A three-bay arched gatehouse inscribed with Arabic "Shahada" and Chinese characters reading “Pure and Unsoiled”
  • Prayer Hall: Three bays wide, two bays deep, featuring intricately carved wooden screens and a domed ceiling with ornate coffered panels; walls display calligraphic plaques inscribed with Quranic verses
  • Minaret: Only foundations remain today; originally about 12 meters tall, designed in the typical Chinese pavilion style

Cultural and Historical Significance

  • Two well-preserved Qing Dynasty stone steles: one commemorating the restoration in the Jiaqing era, the other erected during the Daoguang period, both detailing the mosque’s founding history and donor lists
  • The mosque houses rare manuscript fragments of a hand-copied Qur’an (19th century) and several Arabic-language religious texts, holding significant scholarly value
  • Serves as a long-standing center for religious activities within the Hui community of northern Hebei, hosting daily prayers, sermons, and festive gatherings, thus preserving ethnic identity and cultural heritage
