Description

Xinghua Temple (Under Construction)

📍 Address: Daqingfa Village, Daxing District, Beijing

🏯 Historical Origins

Xinghua Temple was originally established during the Ming Dynasty and once stood as one of the prominent Buddhist temples in southern Beijing. It was a significant component of the "Eight Temples of Daxing." According to the Daxing County Chronicles, the temple was funded by local gentry during the Chenghua era of the Ming Dynasty and underwent restoration in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. At its peak, it housed over a hundred monks, with continuous incense offerings spanning several centuries. Due to wars and societal changes, the temple gradually fell into ruin, leaving behind only remnants of walls and foundations, while some stone architectural elements are scattered throughout the village.

🏛️ Existing Remains and Architectural Features

The main structure of the temple is currently under construction, with Phase I restoration already underway. The primary surviving relics include:

  • Two Ming Dynasty stone lions: Positioned on either side of the mountain gate, carved with simple yet solemn features, displaying the characteristic official style of the Ming period;
  • Two Qing Dynasty steles: One recording the reasons for the restoration, the other detailing monastic regulations. The inscriptions are clear and the calligraphy strong, holding significant historical value;
  • Remaining foundation platforms and column bases: Arranged along a north-south central axis following the natural slope of the hillside, allowing identification of foundational structures such as the front hall and Great Buddha Hall.

🌿 Cultural Significance

Xinghua Temple stands not only as a testament to regional Buddhist faith but also embodies traditional folk customs, patriarchal culture, and the spirit of local benefactors in southern Beijing. Its architectural layout reflects the ingenuity of northern Chinese temple design during the Ming and Qing dynasties—“adapting to terrain, layered courtyards”—making it a representative example for studying the evolution of religious architecture across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
