Xiaozhai Mosque 🕌

📍 Address: Xiaozhai Village, Sangzidian Town, Jinan City, Shandong Province

Historical Development

Xiaozhai Mosque was originally constructed during the Ming Dynasty, with a history of nearly six centuries, making it one of the earliest surviving mosques in the Jinan region. According to records in the "Xiaozhai Village Chronicles" and inscribed stone tablets, the mosque was first built in the Chenghua era of the Ming Dynasty (1465), and underwent multiple renovations and expansions during the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty, eventually forming its current scale. Two Qing-era stone steles titled “Records of the Restoration of the Xiaozhai Mosque” remain within the site, meticulously documenting the restoration process and providing invaluable physical evidence for the study of Hui Muslim religious culture in Shandong Province.

Architectural Features

The mosque faces east with its main buildings arranged along a central axis, including the prayer hall, minaret, lecture hall, and ablution room. The prayer hall spans five bays with a single-eaved hip-and-gable roof covered in green glazed tiles. Its beam and bracket systems are adorned with well-preserved colorful paintings, reflecting typical northern Islamic architectural style. In front of the hall stands a portico-style entrance porch featuring intricately carved wooden latticework windows and a stone plaque above the doorframe inscribed with the Arabic phrase “Shahada” (the Islamic declaration of faith). The minaret rises approximately 12 meters high, with a hexagonal pyramidal roof topped by a crescent-and-star motif—the traditional emblem of Islamic architecture.

Cultural and Heritage Significance

The mosque houses a hand-copied facsimile edition of the Qur’an from the Qing Dynasty, listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage project. During major Islamic festivals such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the mosque hosts traditional recitations, sermons, and folk activities that continue to preserve the religious traditions and cultural identity of the local Hui community. Xiaozhai Mosque serves as a vital religious and cultural center for the Hui population in Jinan, bearing witness to the region’s long history of multiethnic integration.
