Yü Residence Residential Complex

📍 Address: No. 21 Louxi Street, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province
🏛️ Type: Historical & Cultural Heritage · Traditional Residential Architectural Complex

🏛 Historical Background

The Yü Residence was originally constructed during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (circa 1890), built by the local gentry family of Yü from Hangzhou. Having withstood more than a century of storms and changes, it stands as a typical example of late imperial Jiangnan residential architecture in Hangzhou. The complex once served as the ancestral home of the Yü family, offering a vivid glimpse into the lifestyle and social transformations experienced by Hangzhou’s scholarly elite from the late Qing Dynasty through the Republic of China era.

🏗 Architectural Features

  • Strict Layout: Designed with a "three-front, four-side" structure, featuring symmetrical axial planning and three sequential courtyards, with side wings evenly distributed on both sides—reflecting traditional Confucian order and hierarchy.
  • Exquisite Craftsmanship: Masterful examples of wood, brick, and stone carving are present throughout, particularly intricate openwork carvings on gate towers, beams, and brackets. Themes include flowers, birds, figures, and auspicious motifs, each carrying profound symbolic meanings.
  • High-Quality Materials: The main structure employs a post-and-lintel timber framework, with brick walls and small blue tile roofs. The floors are paved with square bricks, resulting in an elegant, refined aesthetic that balances practicality with artistic expression.

🖼 Cultural and Historical Significance

  • Two preserved Qing Dynasty plaques remain on-site, inscribed with “Agriculture and Scholarship Passed Down Through Generations” and “Good Deeds Bring Lasting Blessings,” reflecting the family’s values and Confucian ideals.
  • Original furniture and household items are still intact within the courtyard, including artifacts dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, providing authentic insight into traditional lifestyles in northern Zhejiang.
  • Designated a Hangzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 2013, this site serves as invaluable physical evidence for studying modern Hangzhou residential architecture and family culture.
