Temple of the Founding Meritorious Ministers
📍 Address: 80 meters northeast of the intersection of Yunji Street and Gongchen Temple Road, Xihu District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province
🏯 Historical Origins
The Temple of the Founding Meritorious Ministers, also known as Gongchen Temple, was originally constructed during the Five Dynasties period under the Wuyue Kingdom (907–978 CE), built in commemoration of the kingdom’s founding heroes who served under King Qian Liu. According to records in Ten Kingdoms Chronicle and local gazetteers, Qian Liu established his rule in southeastern China and relied heavily on both civil and military officials. The temple was first erected in the southern part of his capital city, Hangzhou, serving as a significant symbol of the Wuyue regime’s recognition of merit and its emphasis on loyalty and righteousness. It has undergone multiple renovations since the Southern Song Dynasty and became one of Hangzhou’s most important historical sites for ancestral rites during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
🏛️ Architectural Features
The current structure reflects Qing dynasty reconstruction style, facing south with a total area of approximately 1,200 square meters. Along the central axis stand the mountain gate, front hall, main hall, and rear chamber. The main buildings feature a raised-beam wooden framework, with hip-roofed roofs covered in blue tiles and eaves that curve upward like wings, exemplifying the refined elegance characteristic of southern Chinese architecture. The main hall enshrines statues of King Qian Liu and eight of his principal ministers, accompanied by murals depicting historic scenes such as “Suppressing Rebellions” and “Controlling Floods for the People’s Welfare.” The brushwork is meticulous, and the colors are solemn and restrained, reflecting typical stylistic elements from the Song Dynasty.
🏺 Cultural Relics
- Two Ming Dynasty stone steles: Inscribed with the phrases “Exemplary Loyalty Shines Brightly” and “Achievements Endure Through the Ages,” these record the deeds of the meritorious ministers and serve as crucial physical evidence for studying Wuyue political culture.
- One Qing Dynasty bronze bell: Hung on the eastern side of the front hall, inscribed with “Prayers for Blessings and Protection of the Realm,” cast during the Guangxu era. Its deep, resonant tone makes it a provincial-level cultural heritage site.
- Incense burners, altar tables, and other ritual objects: Mostly crafted during the late Qing and early Republican periods, made primarily from bronze and granite, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship.
🌿 Cultural Significance
The Temple of the Founding Meritorious Ministers stands as a rare and invaluable physical testament to the integration of Wuyue military systems, scholar-official ideals, and folk beliefs. It remains an active living embodiment of Hangzhou’s enduring tradition of loyalty, filial piety, integrity, and righteousness. Every year on the 28th day of the third lunar month—the anniversary of King Qian Liu’s birth—traditional community rituals continue to be held, reflecting deep-rooted folk customs.
