The Mountain Ding Couple Trees represent a classic fusion of a Ming Dynasty folk love legend and a natural wonder. According to the local gazetteer Dingyuan County Annals (Qianlong edition), during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, a couple named Shan Ding and Ding Shi from Shanding Village were separated by war and their fate remained unknown. Later, two ancient locust trees growing side by side were discovered at their former residence. Their twisted trunks intertwined as if embracing one another, leading people to believe they were the spiritual manifestations of the couple. A stone tablet was erected in their memory, naming them “Couple Trees.” This legend embodies enduring loyalty and fidelity, serving as a tangible testament to the theme of “unbroken bonds through life and death” within Huizhou culture.

Natural and Cultural Landscape 🌿

• Symbiotic Trees: Two thousand-year-old ancient locust trees stand side by side, with trunks over 1.8 meters in diameter and interlocking canopies resembling arms entwined in embrace. The trees, estimated to be around 600 years old, are designated as a county-level cultural heritage site.
• Inscribed Stone Tablet: A greenstone tablet stands beside the trees, inscribed with “Record of the Mountain Ding Couple Trees” in elegant regular script, detailing the origin of the legend. Though weathered, the characters remain legible.
• Surrounding Remains: Nearby ruins of Ming Dynasty walls and remnants of an ancient well confirm the historical continuity of the village.
