Description

Jinshan Dishui Temple

📍 Address: Deep within Dajinshan Mountain, Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, located at the heart of the Yuntai Mountain range

🏯 Historical Origins

Jinshan Dishi Temple was originally established during the Liang Dynasty (502 CE), making it over 1,500 years old and one of the oldest surviving Buddhist temples in northern Jiangsu. According to the Yuntai Shan Zhi (Chronicles of Yuntai Mountain), the temple was initially named "Dishui An" (Dripping Water Hermitage), so named for a spring on the mountain that continuously flows year-round. During the Tang Dynasty, the renowned monk Huiyuan rebuilt the temple and renamed it "Dishi Si" (Dripping Water Temple), transforming it into a significant Zen Buddhist center where Huai River and Jiangnan Buddhist traditions converged.

🪷 Architectural Features

The temple is built into the mountainside, facing south with a north-facing orientation, arranged in a stepped layout across approximately 3,000 square meters. The main structures—entrance gate, Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, Great Buddha Hall, Sutra Pavilion, and Bell and Drum Towers—are all timber-frame buildings in the Ming and Qing architectural style, featuring dougong bracket systems, upturned eaves, and intricately carved beams and columns. Inside the Great Buddha Hall, three statues of the Three World Buddhas are enshrined, while the side walls display well-preserved Ming Dynasty murals depicting the "Eighteen Arhats," renowned for their exceptional artistic value.

📜 Cultural Relics

  • Tang Dynasty Bronze Guanyin Statue: Standing 1.2 meters tall, this solemn and dignified statue bears an inscription stating “cast at Dishui Temple in the sixth year of Da Li (771 CE),” designated as a national Grade III cultural relic.
  • Qing Dynasty Stone Stele: "Record of Dishui Temple": Erected during the Guangxu era, this stele meticulously documents the temple’s historical evolution and restoration efforts, holding significant archival importance.
  • Millennial Ginkgo Tree: Located in front of the main hall, this ginkgo tree is over 800 years old and hailed as the “Number One Ginkgo of Southern China.” In autumn, its golden leaves cascade like a waterfall, serving as a signature scenic highlight of the site.

🌿 Cultural Significance

Dishui Temple is an important lineage center of the Southern Yue Sect of Chinese Chan Buddhism and once served as the ancestral seat of the “Yuntai Chan School” during the Northern Song Dynasty. Throughout history, it has nurtured numerous distinguished monks, particularly the famed Song Dynasty master Juekong, whose sermons were included in the Great Canon of Buddhist Scriptures. The temple’s “Dripping Water Chan Sound,” one of the local Eight Scenic Views, symbolizes mental clarity and the enduring transmission of spiritual teachings.
