Ping'an Temple was originally established during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty (1465–1487), making it over 500 years old and one of the oldest surviving Buddhist temples in the LiaoZhong region. According to the LiaoZhong County Chronicles, it was initially built through collective contributions by local believers under the name "Guanyin Temple." Due to its flourishing incense offerings and frequent miraculous occurrences, it was officially renamed "Ping'an Chan Temple" during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, adopting its current name. The temple underwent multiple renovations throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties, declined during the Republican period, and was restored through donations from devotees at the end of the 20th century, reactivating religious activities.

Architectural Features 🏛️

The temple is built into the mountainside, facing south with a north-south orientation, featuring a symmetrical central axis layout covering approximately 3,600 square meters. Key structures include the mountain gate, Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, Great Buddha Hall, Sutra Pavilion, and bell and drum towers. The main hall, the Great Buddha Hall, features a single-eaved hip roof with traditional dougong timber framing. Inside, the hall enshrines the Three World Buddhas, flanked by eighteen colorful clay statues of Arhats, all preserved in Qing Dynasty style. The stone steps before the hall are carved with intricate dragon-and-phoenix patterns, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and high artistic value.

• Ming Dynasty Bronze Incense Burner: Standing 68 centimeters tall, with inscriptions on the base reading “Established in the 23rd year of Chenghua,” this is the temple’s most treasured artifact.
• Three Qing Dynasty Steles: Each records details of temple restoration projects and lists donors’ names and contributions; the inscriptions are meticulously written with strong, elegant calligraphy.
• Ancient Ginkgo Tree: Located east of the main hall, this tree is over 400 years old, with twisted branches and golden foliage in autumn, earning it the title “LiaoZhong’s First Ancient Tree.”

Ping'an Temple serves as a vital physical testament for studying folk beliefs, Buddhist dissemination, and regional social changes in Northeast China. In 2019, it was designated a LiaoZhong District Cultural Heritage Protection Unit.
