Xinan Mosque 🕌
📍 Address: Xinhua Street, Xinan Town, Langfang City, Hebei Province
🏛️ Historical Origins
Xinan Mosque was originally constructed during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty (circa 1470), making it over 500 years old and one of the earliest mosques established in northern China. According to the Xinan Town Chronicles, the mosque was built through collective contributions by Hui Muslim ancestors. It underwent renovations during the Kangxi and Guangxu reigns of the Qing Dynasty. The current main structures largely date back to the reconstruction in the 23rd year of Guangxu (1897), serving as a lasting testament to the religious traditions and cultural integration of the local Hui community.
🏘️ Architectural Features
The mosque faces east and is laid out along a central axis, forming a traditional siheyuan (courtyard) layout with a total area of approximately 1,200 square meters. The main hall, known as the Great Prayer Hall, spans five bays with a single-eaved hip roof covered in green glazed tiles. Decorative bracket sets with intricate carvings adorn the eaves, while the interior dome features Islamic geometric patterns. The walls are inlaid with stone inscriptions of verses from the Quran in Arabic script. Flanking the main hall are two auxiliary halls: a lecture hall and a ritual washing room. The door lintels bear the characters “Qingzhen” (Pure Faith), written in bold, powerful calligraphy attributed to a renowned late-Qing dynasty scholar.
📜 Cultural Relics and Remnants
- A stone stele dated to the 23rd year of Guangxu records the renovation history and lists donors, offering significant historical value.
- Two antique copper chandeliers hang at the rear of the main hall, dating back to the Qing Dynasty, with legible inscriptions reading “Presented in the 37th year of Qianlong.”
- A hand-copied manuscript of the Quran, transcribed by a Hui scholar during the Daoguang era, remains well-preserved with clear handwriting. It has been included in the county-level list of intangible cultural heritage.
🌍 Cultural Significance
Xinan Mosque is not only a central place for religious activities among the Hui people but also a crucial physical testament to the spread of Islam and ethnic exchanges in the central Hebei region. Its architectural style blends traditional Chinese timber craftsmanship with Islamic aesthetic principles, embodying the inclusive spirit of Chinese civilization—harmonious coexistence amidst diversity.
