🌟 Historical Origins

Shengfang Ancient Town was originally established during the Spring and Autumn Period, boasting over 2,600 years of history. It is one of the best-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty towns in northern China. The town was officially named "Shengfang" during the Ming Dynasty, benefiting from its advantageous water and land transportation routes. At its peak, it served as a major southern gateway to Beijing and earned the nickname “Little Tianjin.” During the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican era, commerce flourished, with numerous guild halls rising across the town, creating deep cultural roots.

📜 As recorded in the Bazhou Chronicles: “Shengfang lies at a crucial juncture south of Tianjin—its riverside advantages attract merchants from all directions.”

🏛️ Architecture and Layout

The museum is housed within a restored complex of Qing-era traditional buildings, centered around the original Dongyue Temple and surrounding residential courtyards. The layout follows the classic northern Chinese siheyuan (courtyard house) design, featuring glazed tiles, blue bricks, intricate wood carvings, and vibrant murals—typical of official Ming and Qing architectural style. The courtyards are arranged in a harmonious, staggered pattern, with well-preserved gatehouses, screen walls, side rooms, and a performance stage, showcasing the aesthetic essence of northern ancient towns.

  • Main Hall: Former grand hall of Dongyue Temple, now serving as a permanent exhibition space
  • West Courtyard: Display area for folk cultural relics
  • Rear Garden: Space dedicated to intangible cultural heritage crafts
  • Performance Stage: Hosts regular local opera performances

🖼️ Collections and Exhibitions

The museum houses over 3,000 artifacts, including:

  • Ming and Qing furniture, ceramics, and textiles (such as Shengfang floral fabric and brocade embroidery)
  • Ancient manuscripts: Handwritten copy of Brief Records of Shengfang, imperial examination papers
  • Folk artifacts: Wedding ceremonial items, seasonal utensils, farming tools
  • Red Memory Exhibition: Historical materials from underground party organizations in Shengfang during the War of Resistance
