Historical Origins

Xingguo Temple was originally established during the Tang Dynasty under the name "Xingguo Chan Yuan" (Xingguo Zen Monastery), with a history spanning over 1,300 years. According to the Chronicles of Chengdu Prefecture, it once served as one of the most significant Buddhist centers in Shu region and functioned as a vital hub for the dissemination of Chan Buddhism in western Sichuan. The temple underwent major renovations during the Song Dynasty and saw successive expansions in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its architectural grandeur reached its peak during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, forming the classic three-part layout of front hall, central hall, and rear hall.

Architecture and Layout

Built into the mountainside and facing south with its back to the north, the temple follows a symmetrical axial design. Major surviving structures include:

• Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings (a remnant from the Ming Dynasty, featuring a single-eaved gabled roof)
• Mahavira Hall (reconstructed during the Qing Dynasty, with a beam-lifting wooden structure and exquisite painted beams and rafters)
• Sutra Pavilion (added during the Republican era, now used as an exhibition space for cultural relics)

All halls employ traditional brick-and-wood construction, with intricate bracket systems, soaring eaves, and elaborately carved beams and columns, reflecting typical architectural styles of western Sichuan. Ancient cypress trees tower above, stone steles stand densely among them, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere imbued with Buddhist spirit.

Cultural Relics and Treasures

• Tang Dynasty Bronze Buddha Statue: Standing approximately 1.2 meters tall, this solemn and dignified statue is one of the earliest surviving Buddhist sculptures in Sichuan.
• Qing Dynasty Stele Inscription on the Rebuilding of Xingguo Temple: Documents the temple’s historical evolution and renovation records, holding significant archival value.
• Ming Dynasty Plaque “The Lamp of Wisdom Ever Bright”: Written in bold regular script, the plaque remains well-preserved and serves as a crucial physical record for studying local religious culture.
