Dahuangdong Scenic Area lies deep within the Miaoling Mountains of southeastern Guizhou, forming a vital part of the national natural and cultural heritage conservation zone. At its heart lies the "Great Hollow Cave"—a vast network of natural limestone caves. 📜 Historical Development

According to the Jianhe County Chronicles, this region has been inhabited by the Miao people since the Ming and Qing dynasties. Locally, the cave was known as the "Gate of Heaven," regarded as a sacred portal to the spiritual realm. During the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, local Miao ancestors built a "Heaven-Worshipping Altar" here, where the annual "Gudang Festival" rituals have been held continuously ever since. In 2006, Dahuangdong was designated a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage protection site; in 2014, it was listed among China’s National Traditional Villages.

• Ancient Altar Ruins: Located on the western side of the cave entrance, constructed from stacked blue stone blocks and inscribed with Miao script totem symbols—remnants from the Qing Dynasty.
• Ruins of a Wind-Rain Bridge: A surviving wooden truss bridge over a century old, showcasing the ingenuity of traditional Miao architecture.
• Rock Art Remains: Multiple rock paintings suspected to date back to the early Ming Dynasty have been discovered on the cave walls, depicting scenes of hunting and ritual ceremonies—of significant archaeological value.

The scenic area serves as a living testament to the Miao belief in animism. Each October according to the lunar calendar, the grand "Gudang Festival" draws thousands of Miao participants. Unique traditions such as the "Moon-Jumping Dance" and "Lusheng Sacrificial Ceremony" have been included in China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Its dual status as both ecological and cultural heritage makes it a “living fossil” for studying the cultures of ethnic minorities in southwestern China.
