Chuanzhu Temple was originally named "Li Bing Shrine," built in honor of Li Bing, the governor of Shu Commandery during the Warring States period and the founder of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. As Li Bing was revered as the "Lord of Sichuan" (Chuanzhu), the temple took its name from him. Located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Chishui River, Hejiang has long served as a strategic gateway in southern Sichuan. With flourishing water management systems, local communities deeply appreciated Li Bing’s contributions to flood control and irrigation, leading to the establishment of the temple, which has maintained continuous worship for over a millennium.
The temple underwent multiple reconstructions during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The current main structures reflect Qing Dynasty architectural style and stand as one of the best-preserved ancient ritual complexes in southern Sichuan.
Beyond its function as a place of worship dedicated to Li Bing, Chuanzhu Temple serves as a vital physical testament to the study of Ba-Shu water management culture, folk religious systems, and regional social structures. Its core philosophy of “governing through water and honoring virtue” has profoundly shaped agricultural civilization and community governance in southern Sichuan.
Temple festivals continue to be held today. On the 24th day of the sixth lunar month—the anniversary of Chuanzhu’s birth—a solemn sacrificial ceremony is conducted annually and has been included in the provincial list of intangible cultural heritage.
