🏛️ Historical Development:
Phoenix Temple was originally established in the Northern Song Dynasty under the name "Lingjiu Chan Yuan," named after the mountain to the north of the town, whose shape resembles a phoenix spreading its wings. The temple underwent major renovations during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with the most significant expansion occurring during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. At its peak, it served as an important Buddhist preaching center in northern Sichuan, attracting numerous monks and drawing abundant pilgrims. It stands today as one of the better-preserved examples of Song Dynasty Buddhist architecture in the Ba-Shu region.
🎨 Architectural Features:
The current main structure reflects Qing Dynasty architectural style, facing south and built into the hillside, covering approximately 1,200 square meters. Along the central axis are the mountain gate, Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, Great Buddha Hall, and the Sutra Repository Building, flanked on both sides by the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Garbhagriha Hall, and Ancestral Hall. The Great Buddha Hall features a single-eaved hip roof with a dougong bracket system of five levels beneath the eaves, intricately carved and adorned with colorful paintings that retain clear traces of Song Dynasty artistic traditions. Two stone lions stand before the hall, featuring simple yet distinctive craftsmanship typical of local Qing-era artistry.
