Historical Origins

Jinfengshan Temple was originally constructed during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (circa 1530 AD), boasting nearly 500 years of history. According to the Xinyue County Gazetteer, the temple was initially known as "Jinfeng Chan Academy," named after the mountain’s shape resembling a phoenix spreading its wings. It underwent multiple renovations during the Qing Dynasty and served as a gathering place for local literati in the Republican era, becoming a significant center for folk religion and cultural activities in western Sichuan.

Architectural Features

The temple is built into the hillside, facing south with a north-facing orientation, covering an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. Its layout follows a traditional three-hall structure, with surviving buildings including the mountain gate, Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, Great Buddha Hall, Scripture Pavilion, and bell and drum towers. The main structures feature a distinctive dougong wooden framework, tiled roofs with dark green tiles, upturned eaves, and intricately carved beams and pillars, reflecting typical Ming and Qing Buddhist temple architecture of western Sichuan. The Great Buddha Hall preserves remnants of Qing Dynasty murals depicting Buddhist stories, characterized by simple lines and subdued colors, demonstrating considerable artistic value.

Cultural Relics

• Ming Dynasty Stone Stele: Located at the temple entrance, this stele records the founding history and various renovation records of the temple, serving as crucial physical evidence for studying regional religious history.
• Bronze Guanyin Statue: Standing 1.8 meters tall, cast during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty, entirely gilded with a serene expression and solemn posture, it is enshrined at the center of the Great Buddha Hall.
• Ancient Ginkgo Tree: A century-old ginkgo tree stands in the rear courtyard, over 150 years old. In autumn, its golden leaves create a striking visual spectacle, making it a signature landmark of the scenic area.

Cultural Significance

Jinfengshan Temple is not only a sacred site for local devotees but also embodies deep-rooted folk beliefs and regional cultural memory. Every year on the 19th day of the second lunar month (Guanyin's birthday) and the 19th day of the ninth lunar month (Guanyin's ordination day), pilgrims arrive in large numbers, and temple fairs continue to be held, reflecting the unique cultural ecosystem of “Buddhist and folk traditions intertwined” in western Sichuan.
