Built during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD), the Bell and Drum Tower boasts a history spanning over six centuries and stands as one of the most intact ancient public structures remaining in Baijie Town. As a physical remnant of the "morning bell, evening drum" system used in rural towns during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it once served multiple functions including timekeeping, alerting for danger, and hosting community gatherings, bearing witness to the evolution of commerce and folk life in southern Sichuan.
The tower is a three-story wooden structure with double-eaved gable roofs, standing approximately 18 meters tall. Its base is constructed from bluestone, featuring arched entrances on all four sides for passage. The main structure relies on interlocking mortise-and-tenon joints for support, with intricately painted beams that retain clear evidence of Qing Dynasty renovations. A bronze bell hangs at the top level—originally used for local defense, now a replica—while the original drum stand remains at ground level, allowing visitors to experience traditional drumming ceremonies.
More than just a symbol of time, the Bell and Drum Tower embodies the cultural essence of Baijie Town—“ritual and music education, reverence for heaven and ancestral tradition.” During the Lantern Festival (Lunar 15th day of the first month) and Mid-Autumn Festival, locals still gather here to perform lantern processions, chant scriptures, and offer prayers, a practice that continues today and serves as a vital vessel for intangible cultural heritage.
