Historical Background

The Zhou Family Ancestral Hall was built by the Zhou family of Luzhou during the Qing Dynasty, serving as a significant place for the local Zhou descendants to honor their ancestors and unite their kinship. According to the "Zhou Family Genealogy," the ancestors of the Zhou family moved from Jiangxi to South Sichuan during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Over several generations, they flourished and became a prestigious family by the Guangxu Period. The establishment of the hall symbolizes the institutionalization of the family's cultural heritage and witnesses the integration and continuation of immigrant culture in the South Sichuan region.

Architectural Features

The ancestral hall faces south and is built on a mountain slope, adopting the typical South Sichuan "three chambers and two courtyards" layout. The main structure is a wooden frame with a through-truss beam system, covered with green tiles and with upturned eaves and corners. The gate tower is intricately carved, featuring auspicious patterns such as "hundreds of birds paying homage to the phoenix" and "qilin bestowing offspring," symbolizing the prosperity of the family and the wisdom of their descendants. The main hall enshrines tablets of the ancestors of the Zhou family over generations. The side walls retain Qing Dynasty inscriptions and donation tablets, with clear handwriting of high calligraphic and historical value.

Cultural and Historical Value

• There are 5 groups of Qing Dynasty stone carved column bases and 12 wooden carved windows in the hall, all meticulously handcrafted.
• A complete woodblock edition of the "Zhou Family Instructions" is preserved, covering Confucian ethics such as filial piety, frugality, and the transmission of learning and farming, reflecting traditional family education thoughts.
• In 2019, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Luzhou City, an important physical relic for studying the South Sichuan clan system, folk beliefs, and architectural art.
