Description

Qin Shi Huang's Command Platform (Huxianfu Tourist Attraction)

📍 Location: Shanghe County, Jinan City, Shandong Province

🏯 Historical Origins

Qin Shi Huang's Command Platform, also known as "Wanglu Platform," is traditionally believed to have been built by Emperor Qin Shi Huang during his eastern tour through the lands of Qi and Lu, for reviewing troops and surveying the landscape. According to the Records of the Grand Historian: Annals of Qin Shi Huang, the emperor once “traveled east to Langya and erected stone tablets inscribed with praises of Qin’s virtues.” Although this specific site is not explicitly mentioned, local legends and regional chronicles—such as the Shanghe County Gazetteer—frequently record it as one of the few surviving military relics from the Qin Dynasty. Situated by the ancient Ji River, the platform stands on elevated ground with expansive views, perfectly matching the strategic requirements of a traditional command site.

🏛️ Architecture and Remains

The existing ruins consist of a rammed-earth foundation in a square shape, standing approximately 8 meters high with a base length of about 30 meters. The summit is flat and spacious enough to accommodate dozens of soldiers in formation. Despite over a millennium of exposure to wind and rain, distinct layers of rammed earth remain clearly visible. Some sections still feature remnants of green bricks along the edges, likely added during later renovations. Originally, two stone steles stood before the platform—one re-erected during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty, inscribed with “Qin Shi Huang’s Command Platform,” and another erected in modern times, detailing its historical evolution. Lush pine and cypress trees surround the site, their evergreen foliage adding solemnity and tranquility.

📜 Cultural and Archaeological Significance

Although no archaeological artifacts have been unearthed to confirm its use, the site remains a rare example of Qin-era military architecture in Shandong Province, holding significant value for historical and geographical research. Its association with the “Huxianfu” (Fox Spirit Mansion) has given rise to a unique folk cultural symbol. Local legends tell of “Emperor Qin spending a night in the Fox Spirit’s cave, issuing commands and encountering spirits”—a tale blending Taoist beliefs with imperial veneration, reflecting how ordinary people reinterpret historical figures. In 2019, it was designated a Jinan Municipal Cultural Heritage Protection Site, serving as an important representative of Qin cultural remains in the lower reaches of the Yellow River region.
