In 1898, under pressure from foreign powers, the Qing government officially approved Jinan’s designation as a “self-opened port,” making it one of the earliest cities in northern China to embrace openness and international trade. Housed in the former site of the German Consulate General in Jinan, established in 1905, the building stands as one of the most representative Western-style structures from the city’s opening period, bearing witness to the dynamic transformations in modern Sino-foreign exchanges in Shandong.

The building exemplifies classic German classical architecture, constructed with brick and stone, featuring a tiled sloped roof and symmetrical façade adorned with arched windows and doors. The main structure is three stories high, well-preserved overall, and retains original features such as wooden staircases, colored glass windows, and fireplaces—making it a vital physical example for studying the fusion of Chinese and Western architectural styles in modern times.
