Chongwen Yuan

📍 Location: 300 meters northwest of the intersection of Laiwu Road and Medical Avenue, Jinan City, Shandong Province
🕰️ Established in: Ming Dynasty during the reign of Emperor Wanli (1573–1620)
🏛️ Historical Background: The Chongwen Yuan was originally an affiliated academy of the Jinan Prefectural Academy during the Ming Dynasty, initially known as the "Chongwen Pavilion," which was responsible for Confucian education and the collation of classic texts. During the Qing Dynasty's Yongzheng period, it was expanded into the "Chongwen Academy," becoming one of the important academic forums in the Jilu region, and has cultivated many scholars and local celebrities. During the Republic of China period, it was converted into a public school, and due to the war, it fell into disrepair. In 2018, it was restored and reconstructed by the cultural relics department and is now a municipal-level cultural protection unit.

🪷 Architectural Features:

• Built in the style of the Ming and Qing official architecture, facing south with a central axis symmetry layout
• Mainly consists of three courtyards: the front hall "Chongde Hall," the middle courtyard "Wenyuan Pavilion," and the rear hall "Library Building"
• With grey bricks and tiles, upturned eaves, carved beams and painted columns, and a hanging plaque below the eaves reading "Chongwen Ji Shi" (Promoting Culture and Benefiting the World)
• The courtyard is filled with ancient cypresses and stone tablets, preserving three inscriptions from the Ming Dynasty, including the "Record of the Reconstruction of Chongwen Yuan"

📜 Cultural and Historical Value:

• Houses two volumes of the surviving manuscript of the Qing Dynasty's "Four Books and Five Classics," which are provincial-level precious documents
• There are six epitaph tablets in the courtyard listing the names of Jinan scholars who passed the imperial examination during the Ming and Qing dynasties
• As an important physical witness of the history of ancient education in Shandong, it reflects the Confucian tradition of "honoring teachers and valuing education"

🎓 Cultural Activities:

• The "Chongwen Gathering" is held every spring, inviting scholars to lecture on classics, histories, and philosophy
• There are "Ancient Book Restoration Experience Centers" and "Academy Lectures," which are open to the public
