Lingqiu County Yumenkou Old Temple 🏯

📏 Introduction: The Yumenkou Old Temple, also known as the Guan Di Temple, is one of the relatively well-preserved Qing Dynasty folk belief buildings in the northeast of Shanxi Province. It was built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, with a history of nearly three centuries. It is an important material relic for studying the folk religious culture and local social structure in northern Shanxi.

📜 Historical Background

The temple was initially constructed in the 28th year of the Qianlong period (1763), primarily funded by local merchants and farmers, and mainly worshipped Guan Sheng Di Jun, reflecting the widespread spread of "loyalty and righteousness" culture in the northern folk during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was renovated during the Jiaqing and Guangxu periods, and served as a village meeting place during the Republic of China era, with profound social functions. It fell into disrepair in the late 20th century but was jointly restored by the local government and villagers in 2015, restoring its sacrificial function.

🏛️ Architectural Features

• It adopts the traditional "one courtyard" layout, facing south with a width of three rooms and a depth of two rooms.
• The gate is a brick and wood structure with a hipped roof, with eaves supported by corbels, simple yet powerful in decoration.
• The main hall features a raised beam wooden frame, covered with grey tiles on the roof, with complete ridge beasts. The front eaves are equipped with lattice doors, retaining traces of Qing Dynasty colored paintings.
• The hall contains remnants of Qing Dynasty murals depicting the life stories of Guan Yu, which, although partially eroded, still hold artistic value.

🏺 Cultural and Historical Value

• The temple houses a tablet of the "Record of the Reconstruction of the Old Temple" from the 10th year of the Daoguang period (1830), which records the origin of the reconstruction and the list of donors, a precious historical document for studying local economy and social organizations.
• As a rare folk Guan Di Temple in the region bordering Shanxi and Hebei provinces, it reflects the spiritual influence of the "loyalty and righteousness" belief on the people in border areas since the Ming and Qing dynasties.
• It was listed as a county-level cultural relic protection unit in Lingqiu County in 2018.

• Opening Hours: Open year-round; folk sacrifice activities are held on the 15th day of the first lunar month, the 13th day of the fifth lunar month (Guan Di's birthday), and the 13th day of the ninth lunar month (Guan Di's sacrifice day).
• Transportation Tips: Take a Datong to Lingqiu County bus to Yumenkou village, then walk about 500 meters to reach the temple.
• Touring Tips: The temple is located at the foot of a mountain, with a serene environment. It is recommended to visit in the early morning or evening to experience the tranquil atmosphere of the ancient temple.
