Description
Dharma King Hall
📍 Address: 280 meters southwest of the intersection between G18 Rongwu Expressway and Wangzhuangbao Interchange
🕰️ Historical Background:
Dharma King Hall was originally constructed during the Great Zhong Xiangfu period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1008 CE), initially serving as the main hall of "Wangzhuang Temple." It later took its current name due to the veneration of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. The hall has undergone multiple reconstructions during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, making it one of the better-preserved examples of Song Dynasty Buddhist architecture in northern China. According to the Yongji County Chronicles, this hall once served as a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhist devotees from Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, and Henan provinces, renowned for its flourishing incense offerings.
🏛️ Architectural Features:
The hall faces south with a single-eaved hip roof, measuring five bays wide and three bays deep, covering a total area of approximately 320 square meters. Its timber framework exemplifies the typical Song Dynasty "raised beam" structure, featuring robust bracket sets with intricately carved brackets, showcasing exceptional architectural value. Inside, remnants of Ming Dynasty colored murals remain, depicting scenes from the Samantabhadra's Practices and Vows Sutra. The figures are lifelike, with solemn colors reflecting the style of the northern Chinese painting school.
🏺 Cultural Relics:
- Two stone lions stand before the hall, carved during the Jin Dynasty; their imposing forms feature clearly defined coiled cloud patterns on their tails;
- A Ming Dynasty bronze statue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is enshrined at the center of the main hall, standing 2.4 meters tall, seated atop a white elephant, holding a ruyi scepter, entirely gilded, designated as a national Grade III cultural relic;
- A Qing Dynasty stele inscribed with the Record of the Reconstruction of Dharma King Hall is embedded in the wall, documenting the restoration work carried out during the Qianlong era.
✨ Cultural Significance:
Beyond being a physical testament to the evolution of Song Dynasty Buddhist architecture, Dharma King Hall embodies the historical convergence of Chan Buddhism and Pure Land teachings in China. Its spirit of "practice and vows," along with the profound belief in "great wisdom and great action," continues to influence the spiritual lives of local communities.
