Description
Xu Family Ancestral Hall
π Location: Along G4221 Shanghai-Wuhan Expressway, Wuzhen Town, Wujing District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province
ποΈ Historical Background
The Xu Family Ancestral Hall was built during the Ming Chenghua period (1470 AD), with a history of over five centuries. It is one of the well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty family ancestral halls in the Jiangnan region. The hall serves as an important venue for the Xu family to honor their ancestors and unite their kin, witnessing the development of the lineage culture in the Wujing area. A major renovation was carried out during the Qing Guangxu period, preserving the typical Suzhou architectural style.
πͺ΅ Architectural Features
The ancestral hall faces south and is built along the water, covering an area of approximately 800 square meters. It follows a "three-journey-five-bay" layout, with the central axis consisting of the hall, the hall of reverence, and the hall of rest, flanked by side rooms and a tablet corridor. The structure is primarily brick and wood, with beautifully decorated beams and joists, particularly famous for the stage ceiling and the gate tower brick carvings. It blends the elegance of Suzhou's classical gardens with the solemnity of ancestral halls. The roof is covered with green tiles, and the eaves are upturned, embodying the Jiangnan essence of "powdered walls and dark tiles."
π Cultural and Historical Value
The hall currently houses two Ming dynasty stone tablets, three Qing dynasty family genealogy scrolls, and numerous couplets handwritten by the Xu ancestors, all of which are valuable historical documents. The hall also preserves a Qing dynasty "Filial Piety and Loyalty" plaque, reflecting traditional Confucian ethical thought. As a cultural relic protection unit in Wujing District, the Xu Family Ancestral Hall is an important physical relic for studying the lineage system, folk beliefs, and architectural art in Jiangnan.
