Description
ποΈ Shenshan National Forest Park
π Location: 15 kilometers northwest of Chengxiang Town, within the jurisdiction of Caowan Village
π³ Area: Approximately 28 square kilometers
π
National Recognition: Approved as a national forest park by the State Council in 2004
πΏ Historical Origins
The name "Shenshan" originates from the Tang Dynasty's "Zhenyuan Geographic Record," which states: "Shenshan is a mountain with an ancient sacred temple, where prayers for rain are always answered." Since the Southern and Northern Dynasties, this place has been a sacred site of Taoism. The "Great Ming General Treatise" from the Ming Dynasty explicitly records "Shenshan has the Yuqing Temple, which is regularly worshipped every year." Over the past thousand years, Shenshan has served as a local center of faith, carrying profound folk blessing culture and religious ritual traditions.
π― Architecture and Cultural Relics
The main relics existing in the park include:
- Yuqing Temple Ruins: Built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, the ruins feature stone foundations, inscribed stones, and three Qing Dynasty restoration tablets, with detailed inscriptions on the tablets about the repairs and worship activities throughout the dynasties.
- Sky Ladder Stairs: Totaling 328 meters in length, constructed of grey stone, winding up the mountain slope, built in the Qing Dynasty, and serving as the necessary path for ancient pilgrims to ascend the peak.
- Prayer Rain Bronze Cauldron: Cast in the Ming Dynasty, standing 1.8 meters tall, with inscriptions on the cauldron reading "Harmony of Winds and Rain, Peace and Prosperity for the Country," currently displayed in the park's museum.
πΈ Cultural Value
Shenshan is not only a natural ecological protection area but also an important carrier of Chinese traditional culture. Its "mountain-temple-ritual" trinity reflects the traditional Chinese philosophical thought of "the unity of heaven and man." During the "Shenshan Festival" on the 15th day of the third lunar month each year, a grand sacrifice is held locally, which has been listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage.
