Description

Mito Temple 🏯

Located in the northeastern corner of Huangfu Mountain National Forest Park, Mito Temple was originally established during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty (1465 AD). It is one of the better-preserved Buddhist temples from the Ming era in eastern Anhui Province, having undergone multiple renovations throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties, with a history spanning over 500 years.

Historical Development

  • Founded in the Ming Chenghua era by monk Huiyuan, it was initially named "Ciyun An," later renamed "Mito Temple" after the principal deity, Amitabha Buddha, was enshrined.
  • The temple was repaired during both the Kangxi and Guangxu reigns of the Qing Dynasty, with the most comprehensive reconstruction occurring in the 23rd year of Guangxu (1897), when the main hall was rebuilt.
  • During the Republic of China period, it served as a regional center for Buddhist activities. It fell into disuse during the War of Resistance Against Japan but was gradually restored after the founding of the People's Republic, with religious practices resuming over time.

Architecture and Layout

  • Built into the mountainside, facing south with a north-south axis, the temple complex follows a three-court layout covering approximately 3,000 square meters.
  • Along the central axis are: the mountain gate, the Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Sutra Repository, flanked on either side by bell and drum towers, meditation rooms, and monastic dwellings.
  • The Great Buddha Hall features a single-eaved hip roof with a timber frame using raised beam construction. Decorative dougong brackets are present beneath the eaves, and the beams and rafters still display distinctive characteristics of Ming Dynasty craftsmanship.
  • The temple houses two historically significant steles: one inscribed during the Ming Chenghua period and another commemorating the Qing Guangxu restoration, both recording the temple’s evolution and donor lists—of considerable historical value.

Cultural and Artistic Significance

  • The principal statue is a gilded bronze figure of Amitabha Buddha, standing 2.1 meters tall, cast during the Qing Dynasty. The sculpture exudes solemnity and reflects exceptional craftsmanship.
  • The temple preserves several hand-copied ancient manuscripts of texts such as the Mahaprajna Paramita Sutra and the Avatamsaka Sutra, part of a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage protection project.
  • As a major center of Buddhist faith in eastern Anhui, Mito Temple has long played a vital role in community rituals, seasonal ceremonies, and folk religious practices, embodying deep-rooted local traditions.
