🏯 Former Site of Zunsheng Chan Temple

🕰️ Historical Background: Zunsheng Chan Temple was originally established during the Zhen Guan era of the Tang Dynasty (627 CE), becoming one of the prominent Zen Buddhist centers in the Huai River and Jiangnan region. According to the Lai'an County Gazetteer, it was initially named "Zunsheng Temple," later renamed "Zunsheng Chan Temple" due to its lineage of Zen Buddhist teachings. The temple underwent multiple reconstructions during the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties and once served as a central hub of Buddhism in eastern Anhui, renowned alongside Jiuhua Mountain and Tianzhu Mountain as one of the "Three Sacred Mountains of Chan Monasteries."

🏛️ Architecture and Remains:

• The current site covers approximately 3,000 square meters, featuring remnants of the Ming Dynasty rebuilt mountain gate foundation, one stone dharani pillar, one ancient well, and portions of brick and stone wall foundations.
• Three surviving stone-carved Buddha fragments from the Tang and Song dynasties are preserved within the grounds. Their simple, robust style reflects typical characteristics of southern Chinese Zen Buddhist sculpture.
• A Qing Dynasty stele titled "Record of the Restoration of Zunsheng Chan Temple" stands on-site, inscribed by the county magistrate at the time, detailing the temple’s rise and decline and its role in local religious life.

📜 Cultural Significance:

• As a continuously active Buddhist site for over a millennium since the Tang Dynasty, it bears witness to the spread of Buddhism and the evolution of Zen thought in the Huai River region.
• The dharani pillar is inscribed with the Zunsheng Dharani Sutra, serving as crucial physical evidence for studying the dissemination of Tantric Buddhism in Tang China.
• Numerous inscriptions by poets and scholars from various dynasties remain, particularly notable being the poems composed by the Ming Dynasty poet Li Mengyang during his visit.
