🏯 Historical Origins

Dongsheng Chan Temple was originally established during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Southern Liang Dynasty (6th century AD), making it over 1,400 years old and one of the oldest surviving Buddhist temples in eastern Anhui. According to the Lai'an County Chronicles, the temple was initially named "Dongsheng Yuan," derived from its location east of the county town and its majestic mountain setting. During the Tang Dynasty, it received imperial recognition and was renamed "Dongsheng Chan Temple," becoming one of the Five Great Monastic Centers in the Huai River and Jianghuai regions. It flourished with vibrant religious activity and produced numerous distinguished monks.

🏛️ Architecture and Cultural Relics

The temple is built into the mountainside, facing south with a north-south central axis and symmetrical layout. Key structures include:

• Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings: Rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty, this hall spans three bays with a single-eaved hip-and-gable roof; its beams and rafters feature well-preserved colorful paintings.
• Mahavira Hall: Restored during the Qing Dynasty, housing a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, flanked by statues of the Eighteen Arhats. The Buddha niches are carved from nanmu wood, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship.
• Sutra Pavilion: Located at the back of the mountain, originally used for storing the Great Canon of Buddhist Scriptures. Today it serves as a Buddhist cultural exhibition hall, housing rare hand-copied scriptures from the Ming and Qing dynasties and rubbings of ancient stone inscriptions.
• Ancient Well and Stone Pagoda: In front of the temple stands a thousand-year-old well with clear, fresh water. To the west lies a Tang Dynasty stone pagoda inscribed with the words "Amitabha Buddha," designated as a provincial-level protected cultural site.

Dongsheng Chan Temple is a vital physical testament for studying the spread of Buddhism in southern China, ancient architectural art, and local religious customs. Its extensive collection of inscriptions and epigraphs—spanning poetry, Dharma teachings, and donor records—holds immense historical and scholarly value. Designated an Anhui Provincial Key Cultural Heritage Site in 2013, it was also selected in 2021 as one of the "Top Ten Thousand-Year-Old Temples in Anhui."
