Description

Jade Buddha Garden 🏯

📍 Address: No. 58 Lühua Street, High-Tech Development Zone, Anshan City, Liaoning Province

🌿 Historical Origins

Established in 2003, Jade Buddha Garden is a comprehensive cultural site integrating Buddhist heritage, jade carving art, and classical garden landscapes. At its heart lies the natural emerald jade Buddha from Myanmar, donated by a Thai monk in 1996. The statue, entirely carved from a single piece of jade, shines with vibrant green clarity, stands approximately 1.6 meters tall, and weighs 4.5 tons—making it an exceptionally rare masterpiece of solid jade sculpture worldwide, hailed as a "treasure of the East." Originally enshrined at Dajian Temple on Qianshan Mountain in Liaoning Province, the Buddha was relocated to Anshan for religious and cultural exchange purposes, where it now resides at its current site.

🏛️ Architectural Layout

Spanning about 12,000 square meters, the garden is built along the slopes of a hill, blending architectural styles from southern China’s classical gardens with those of northern China. Key structures include:

  • Jade Buddha Hall: A Tang-style pavilion with double eaves and a gabled roof, housing the sacred Buddha; surrounding murals depict stories from the Buddha’s past lives
  • Bell and Drum Towers: Symmetrically arranged, their morning bells and evening drums echo across the landscape
  • Stone Inscription Corridor: Featuring calligraphy by renowned monks throughout history and excerpts from Buddhist scriptures
  • Zen Courtyard: Designed with Taihu stones, winding streams, and bamboo shadows to evoke a sense of ethereal tranquility

🪷 Cultural Significance

  • The Jade Buddha is designated as a National First-Class Cultural Relic and listed in the Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Register under the category of jade carving craftsmanship
  • An annual grand Dharma ceremony is held on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month during the “Bathing the Buddha Festival,” drawing tens of thousands of devotees
  • As a major center for Buddhist cultural dissemination in Northeast China, the site regularly hosts meditation retreats, intangible cultural heritage exhibitions, and other cultural programs
