Earthwork Contractors' Ancestral Hall

📍 Address: Cailiu Line, Xijiao Town, Nanhai District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province (specifically within the Jiancun area)

🏛️ Historical Background
The Earthwork Contractors' Ancestral Hall was originally constructed during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1875–1908). Built by local craftsmen engaged in earth and stone work, it served as a clan temple for worshipping common ancestors and upholding professional ethics and community bonds. The hall stands as a significant testament to the development of construction and commercial industries in southern Lingnan during modern times, offering vital physical evidence for studying the guild systems and folk religious practices of the Pearl River Delta region.

🏗️ Architectural Features
Facing south with its back to the north, the hall covers approximately 280 square meters and follows the traditional Guangfu residential layout with a three-aisle courtyard design. Constructed using brick and wood with a hard-gabled roof, it features well-preserved gray-plaster ridge ornaments and colorful murals. The main entrance bears a stone tablet inscribed with "Earthwork Contractors' Ancestral Hall," the characters bold and forceful. The beam framework is intricately carved, particularly notable for its "Two Dragons Competing for the Pearl" and "Three Stars of Fortune, Prosperity, and Longevity" motifs—exemplifying the exceptional craftsmanship of Lingnan artisans.

🏺 Cultural and Historical Value
Inside the hall are two Qing Dynasty wooden tablets inscribed with ancestral precepts, detailing industry regulations and mutual assistance agreements. Additionally, there is one stone stele from the Republic of China era recording over a hundred names of craftsmen who contributed to local water conservancy and road construction projects—of considerable historical significance. Designated as a Foshan Municipal Cultural Heritage Site in 2013.

📜 Cultural Significance
Beyond serving as a spiritual symbol for the guild organization, the hall embodies the core values of the Lingnan craftsmen: integrity as the foundation, diligence as the path to success. Every year on the second day of the second lunar month—the "Craftsmen's Festival"—descendants of local artisans still hold ancestral memorial ceremonies, preserving this tradition across generations.
