Xuyan Manchu Museum 🏯
📍 Address: No. 133 Fuchang Road, Xuyan Manchu Autonomous County, Anshan City, Liaoning Province
📜 Historical Development
Established in 1987, the Xuyan Manchu Museum is China’s first specialized museum dedicated to Manchu culture. Housed on the original site of the Qing Dynasty’s “Xuyan Prefectural Office,” it preserves nearly 300 years of local governance history by the Manchu people in eastern Liaoning. Fully renovated and expanded in 2006, the museum is now a national Grade III museum under the jurisdiction of the Xuyan Manchu Autonomous County Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film, Television, and Press.
🏛️ Architectural Features
The museum complex is reconstructed in the traditional style of Manchu residential architecture, blending Qing official building forms with Northeastern folk elements. Featuring glazed blue tiles, gray bricks, intricate wood carvings, and colorful murals, the layout includes a main hall, east and west annex halls, and courtyard corridors. The overall design reflects the classical “administrative front, private rear” spatial hierarchy, combining historical authenticity with regional aesthetic values.
🖼️ Collections
The museum houses over 5,000 cultural artifacts related to the Manchu people, including:
- Qing Dynasty documents: Official records in both Manchu and Chinese, household registers, and tax ledgers;
- Ethnic costumes: Well-preserved traditional attire such as Manchu qipao, jackets, and felt boots (wuli);
- Everyday utensils: Pottery, copper stoves, horse saddles, and fishing and hunting tools;
- Religious relics: Shamanic effigies, ritual instruments used in shaman dances, and totemic symbols;
- Intangible cultural heritage items: Paper cuttings, embroidery works, and manuscripts of oral storytelling traditions.
🌟 Cultural Significance
As a vital cultural institution in regions with significant Manchu populations, the museum systematically presents the origins, migrations, customs, language, arts, and spiritual beliefs of the Manchu people. It serves as an authoritative resource for studying Manchu social structures, folk evolution, and ethnic integration. Its exhibitions on “Manchu Wedding Customs” and “Shamanic Culture” have been designated provincial-level demonstration bases for intangible cultural heritage dissemination.
