Description

Changshen Local Opera Stage, Chicheng County

📍 Address: By the side of Provincial Road 505, Changshen Village, Chicheng County, Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province

🏯 Historical Origins

The Changshen Local Opera Stage was originally constructed during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (1796–1820), making it over 200 years old. It stands as one of the better-preserved traditional folk opera performance venues in central Zhejiang. Built to fulfill local villagers’ customary needs for “worshiping deities and holding festival performances,” it bears witness to the flourishing and transmission of rural opera culture in eastern Zhejiang from the Qing Dynasty through the Republic of China era.

🏛️ Architectural Features

The stage is a typical single-eaved gabled-roof wooden structure with three bays, measuring approximately 10 meters wide, 7 meters deep, and 8 meters high. The main framework employs a stilted beam system, adorned with intricate carvings and painted beams, while eaves curve upward like spreading bird wings. The space is divided into front and back stages: the front features a “music pavilion” and “dragon canopy” for orchestral performances and actor waiting areas, while the rear retains original spaces for makeup and costume changes. The roof is covered with blue tiles, and the ridge is decorated with a glazed clay sculpture of two dragons chasing a pearl—exemplifying distinctive regional craftsmanship.

🎭 Cultural and Heritage Value

  • Two stone inscriptions from the late Qing and early Republican periods remain inside the stage, recording performances by renowned folk troupes such as the “Yongle Troupe” and “Fushou Society.”
  • Multiple fragments of colorful murals are preserved on the supporting pillars, depicting scenes from classic operas including The Western Chamber and Mu Guiying Takes Command, reflecting the artistic style of the Eastern Zhejiang painting school.
  • As an important vehicle for grassroots dissemination of the intangible cultural heritage “Wu Opera,” the Changshen Local Opera Stage continues to host occasional performances by local troupes, preserving living cultural memory.
