Zhengdefa Museum of Ming-Qing Style Rosewood Furniture
📍 Address: Southwest side of the Zhengdefa Museum of Ming-Qing Style Rosewood Furniture, Houdong Town, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province (specific address available via official visitor guide system)
🏛️ Historical Origins
Established in 2012, the Zhengdefa Museum of Ming-Qing Style Rosewood Furniture was founded by Zhengdefa, a local Dongguan enterprise dedicated to preserving rosewood culture. It is the first specialized museum in South China focused on traditional Ming and Qing dynasty rosewood furniture. The collection features over 300 pieces of furniture crafted in the classic Ming-Qing style, made from premium woods such as huanghuali, nanmu (small-leaf purple sandalwood), and big red mandarin wood, comprehensively showcasing the evolution of Chinese classical furniture craftsmanship and its underlying humanistic spirit.
🏗️ Architectural Style
The museum’s main structure blends architectural elements of Lingnan gardens and Huizhou-style design, employing traditional mortise-and-tenon wooden framing with blue bricks and dark tiles, along with winding corridors. The courtyard features artificial mountains, flowing water features, and stone-carved plaques, evoking the Eastern aesthetic of “one piece of wood, one world; one room, one universe.” The exhibition layout follows the principles outlined in Yingzao Fashi, reflecting the ordered spatial hierarchy of traditional ritual architecture.
🖼️ Notable Collections
Key exhibits include:
- A pair of Ming dynasty huanghuali armchairs (National Grade III Cultural Relic)
- A Qing dynasty nanmu taishi chair (originally passed down through a prominent family in southern China)
- A big red mandarin wood "Hundred Sons" bed with intricate carvings inspired by the classic painting Hundred Sons Playing in Spring
- A set of early 20th-century Guangzhou-style rosewood furniture tools (listed in the local intangible cultural heritage protection program)
Each piece is accompanied by a catalog number, provenance research, and information about the craftsman who made it, establishing a transparent, interpretable exhibition system.
🌿 Cultural Significance
Beyond being a repository of artifacts, the museum serves as a living center for the transmission of rosewood culture. It regularly hosts public workshops such as “Mortise-and-Tenon Craft Classes” and “Ancient Furniture Restoration Sessions,” and collaborates with Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to establish a “Research Base for Traditional Craftsmanship.” Its lecture series, “Chinese Philosophy Embodied in Rosewood Furniture,” deeply explores concepts like “harmony between humanity and nature” and “ritual and music systems” as expressed in material culture.
