Named for its location at the southern edge of the Puer Prefecture, it historically functioned as a major distribution center for tea, medicinal herbs, and supplies for caravans, bearing witness to the vibrant exchanges of trade and ethnic integration across the southwestern frontier.

🏛️ Architecture and Layout:
The scenic area centers on traditional rammed-earth dwellings and stone-paved pathways, featuring more than ten architectural complexes dating from the Qing Dynasty to the early Republic period, including former post stations, caravan inns, and teahouse guild halls. The design blends elements from Yi, Hani, and Dai ethnic groups—wooden truss roofs, intricately carved windows and doors, and hearth courtyards are arranged harmoniously, reflecting the region’s rich cultural diversity and coexistence.

🏺 Cultural Relics and Remains:

• Two well-preserved inscribed steles of the Tea Horse Road, recording Qing Dynasty regulations on tea taxation and caravan travel protocols during the Guangxu era.
• Artifacts unearthed at the post station site—including ceramic jars, iron tools, and copper coins—have been authenticated by the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology as relics from the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty.
• A century-old wild tea tree (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) still stands in the southeast courtyard, officially designated as a "Provincial Heritage Tree."

Puer South serves as a crucial physical testament for studying the transportation history, ethnic economic development, and spread of tea culture in China’s southwestern borderlands. Its spatial layout fully preserves the traditional structure of “road—post station—market,” earning it the title of “a living microcosm of the Tea Horse Road.” It was listed as a provincial-level cultural heritage site in 2019.
