The Nakeli Tea Horse Post was established during the Tang Dynasty and flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is one of the most complete and representative posts along the ancient "Tea Horse Road" in Yunnan's southwest. As a key transportation node connecting Yunnan with Tibet and Myanmar, it was once the core hub for the exchange of goods such as tea, horses, and salt. It witnessed the integration of ethnic groups and the evolution of commercial civilization over thousands of years.
The North Fortress Gate serves as the eastern entrance to the post and was built during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. Constructed with local green stone, the structure is sturdy. The gate opening measures approximately 4 meters high and 3.5 meters wide. The stone tablet above the gate is inscribed with the characters "North Fortress Gate" in regular script, with strong brush strokes that are still clearly visible after enduring the elements. The walls on either side of the gate retain the original rammed earth structure, with some stone carvings still intact, reflecting the architectural style of the Qing Dynasty in border areas. The existing ancient post road is about 800 meters long, paved with green stone, winding through the countryside. The stone surface is marked with deep hoof prints from horses, narrating the prosperity of past commercial travelers.
Nakeli is an important part of the "China Tea Horse Road Cultural Heritage." It was listed as a key cultural relic protection unit in 2013. Its historical relics fully present the transportation system, management system, and folk culture of the Tea Horse Road, serving as a living sample for studying the history of the southwest frontier, ethnic migration, and economic exchanges. The post also preserves precious cultural relics such as the horse caravan tablet, tea tax tablet, and ancient wells, which hold high historical and artistic value.
