The Ancient Well of Guolou Street is located within the core area of the ancient city, representing a significant remnant of the Ming Dynasty’s hydraulic system in southern Chinese towns. According to the Regional Gazetteer: Water Conservancy Chapter, the well was originally named "Tongji Spring." Its name evolved due to its strategic position at a major thoroughfare—making it an essential stop for travelers and local residents seeking water. During the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, the well underwent major restoration, with inscriptions on the stone rim clearly reading “Rebuilt in the 47th Year of Qianlong,” providing tangible evidence of its enduring legacy.
The well shaft is circular, approximately 6.8 meters deep with an inner diameter of 1.2 meters, constructed entirely from stacked blue stone. The wellhead railing is carved from a single block of granite, featuring finely detailed relief lotus petal patterns along the outer edge—exemplifying typical official Qing architectural style. The well platform is paved with rectangular bricks, flanked by stone steps facilitating access for those drawing water. The well walls are bonded with pebbles and glutinous rice mortar, remaining remarkably stable after centuries, showcasing advanced ancient techniques in waterproofing and durability.
Beyond being a vital source of life, the ancient well stands as a symbol of urban folk culture. Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, nearby residents still perform the “Water Blessing Ceremony”—offering incense to the well in reverence, preserving a tradition spanning millennia. Under the old locust tree beside the well, storytellers often recite episodes from Water Margin, echoing the popular folk legend of Liangshan outlaws drawing water here, enriching the site with profound cultural atmosphere.
