Xindu Square is located in the heartland of ancient Shu civilization—Xindu District. The name dates back to 316 BC, when the Qin dynasty established the "Xindu County" after conquering Shu. As one of the key administrative centers of the ancient Shu Kingdom, this site served as a major town within the Han Dynasty’s Yizhou region and historically functioned as the eastern gateway to the Chengdu Plain. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it had already evolved into a public space integrating commerce, ritual worship, and folk traditions, laying the foundation for today’s square.
🏛️ Architectural Features:
The square features a rectangular layout covering approximately 8,500 square meters, paved with blue stone and designed along a central axis with symmetrical planning. Key structures include:
- Ruins Pavilion of Xindu Confucian Temple: A surviving structure from the Ming Dynasty, housing a stone tablet inscribed with the words “Dacheng Hall,” originally erected during the Qing Dynasty;
- Reconstructed Bell and Drum Towers: Built according to original designs, featuring upturned eaves and a bronze bell inside. The morning bell and evening drum are sounded daily, preserving traditional ritual music culture;
- Exhibited Section of Ancient City Wall Remains: Spanning about 120 meters, constructed using rammed earth and embedded with Han Dynasty ceramic fragments and Song Dynasty brick inscriptions, offering tangible evidence of urban development over time.
📜 Cultural and Archaeological Significance:
- Stone carving of the “Five Dragons Encircling the Sacred” relief (Qianlong period, Qing Dynasty): Depicts auspicious totems with exceptional artistic value;
- Seal paste imprint of the “Xindu Commandant’s Seal” unearthed through archaeological excavations from the Han Dynasty, now housed at the Chengdu Museum;
- The annual “Spring Sacrificial Ceremony” held on the second day of the second lunar month, maintaining a thousand-year-old ritual tradition, recognized as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage project.
