🏛️ Historical Origins
Built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (circa 1760), the Xiang Clan Ancestral Hall is one of the better-preserved traditional clan temples from the Qing era in southern Yunnan. According to the Xiang Family Genealogy, the ancestors of the Xiang family migrated from Jiangxi to southern Yunnan and, after several generations of growth and settlement, established the ancestral hall in Wulong Village during the mid-Qing period. This was done to honor their forebears, unite clan members, and uphold ritual propriety. More than just a spiritual sanctuary for the Xiang family, the hall stands as a significant testament to local clan culture and regional history.
🏗️ Architectural Features
The hall faces south with its back to the north, covering an area of approximately 450 square meters. It follows the classic Sino-Yunnanese quadrangle courtyard layout, with symmetrical design and three sequential courtyards along a central axis. The main structure employs traditional wooden dougong beam framing, with tiled roofs featuring blue tiles and upturned eaves adorned with intricate carvings. The main hall rises solemnly, with exquisite wood carvings beneath the front eaves depicting themes such as “Two Phoenixes Facing the Sun” and “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea.” The side wings are decorated with colorful murals illustrating stories of filial piety, rural farming life, and scholarly achievements, reflecting the harmonious integration of Confucian ethics and agrarian civilization.
📜 Cultural and Historical Significance
Inside the hall, three Qing-era wooden plaques remain, one inscribed with the phrase “Loyalty and Filial Piety Passed Down Through Generations,” written in bold regular script and erected during the Guangxu era. Additional artifacts include fragments of family genealogies, ritual vessels, and two Ming and Qing dynasty stone steles that meticulously document the clan’s migration history and ancestral regulations. Designated a Provincial Cultural Heritage Site of Yunnan Province in 2013, the hall serves as a rare and invaluable resource for studying clan systems, folk beliefs, and architectural artistry in southern Yunnan.

The Xiang Clan Ancestral Hall remains a vital site for descendants to pay respects to their ancestors and trace their roots. It also plays a key role in community moral education. Every year on the second day of the second lunar month—the “Spring Sacrificial Day”—family members gather for a solemn ceremony, passing down rituals and strengthening familial bonds. Revered as a living fossil of southern Yunnan’s ancestral temple culture, it continues to preserve tradition through time.
