Description

Mosque

📍 Address: 80 meters northwest of the intersection between National Highway 218 and Jieliangzi Road
🕰️ Historical Development:
The mosque was originally built in the mid-Qing Dynasty (circa 1760), making it one of the better-preserved examples of Qing-era Islamic architecture in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. After multiple reconstructions, its main structure dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, reflecting the cultural exchange among ethnic groups and the continuity of religious faith in the region.

🕌 Architectural Features:
Oriented west to east, the mosque follows traditional Islamic architectural style, blending elements from Central Asia and China’s inland regions. The main prayer hall features a domed roof covered with green glazed tiles, topped by a tall minaret (call to prayer tower) adorned with geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy inscriptions. Inside, the hall is decorated with colorful woodcarvings and brickwork; walls feature stone carvings of verses from the Quran, embodying the religious principle of "aniconism." The courtyard is meticulously laid out, including a water basin (ablution pool) and surrounding colonnades, serving both practical and symbolic functions.

🏺 Cultural Relics and Remnants:

  • Two well-preserved relics: a Qing Dynasty wooden lintel and a marble stele, the latter inscribed with records of the mosque’s founding and subsequent restoration efforts.
  • A Ming Dynasty bronze chandelier hangs inside the main hall, designated as a national third-class cultural relic.
  • The spatial layout retains the complete “prayer hall—lecture hall—ablution room—courtyard” quadrangle structure, representing a typical Islamic religious spatial order.

Cultural Significance:
As a significant center for Islamic religious activities in Xinjiang, this mosque serves not only as a place for daily prayers, festivals, and religious education but also as a tangible example for studying Qing Dynasty frontier religious policies, interethnic interactions, and the fusion of architectural arts. Its architectural form and ritual practices carry profound cultural memories of ethnic minorities such as the Uyghurs, holding immense historical and humanistic value.
