The Geng Yanbo Warning Stele was erected in 2014 to commemorate former Mayor Geng Yanbo of Taiyuan City (2008–2013) for his pivotal role in advancing urban cultural heritage preservation and revitalization during his tenure. Located within the ancient Huayan Temple—a temple with a history spanning over a millennium—the stele stands as a significant testament to Taiyuan’s cultural protection efforts and collective historical memory. Guided by the philosophy of “restoring history, reestablishing cultural continuity,” Geng Yanbo led large-scale restoration projects including Jin Ci, Shuangta Temple, and Chunya Palace, earning him the affectionate title of “Guardian of the Ancient City” among local residents.
Standing approximately 2.3 meters tall, the stele is crafted from dark green stone. Its surface bears inscriptions in regular script drawn from excerpts of The Record of Warnings, emphasizing core principles of governance: “reverence for history, respect for culture, and cautious use of power.” The base adopts a Vaisravana-style pedestal adorned with lotus motifs, symbolizing purity and solemnity. Lush pines and cypresses flank the stele, creating a tranquil atmosphere that embodies solemn reflection on the past.
More than a tribute to an individual official’s ethos, this stele embodies profound contemplation on the balance between preservation and development in modern urbanization. It serves as a reminder that urban progress should never come at the cost of erasing historical fabric, but must instead be rooted in cultural continuity. As Taiyuan’s first contemporary cultural landmark named after a living figure, it holds substantial social and educational value.
