Description

Yang Mansion

๐Ÿ“ Location: Zhangqiao Town, Dingyuan County, Chuzhou City, Anhui Province, adjacent to the Zhangqiao Detachment of the Traffic Police of the Dingyuan County Public Security Bureau and the Zhangqiao Vehicle Administration Service Center

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Historical Background

The Yang Mansion was constructed in the middle of the Ming Dynasty and was the residence of the famous scholar family, the Yangs, in the region. According to the "Dingyuan County Records," the ancestors of the Yangs were descendants of meritorious officials from the early Ming Dynasty, who were granted positions due to their achievements and settled here. After hundreds of years of vicissitudes, the Yang Mansion has witnessed the rise and fall of local clan culture during the Ming and Qing dynasties and is one of the few ancient official residential heritage sites preserved relatively intact in the eastern part of Anhui Province.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Architectural Style

The architectural complex faces south and is built against the mountains, with an overall layout of "three passages and five halls," covering an area of approximately 1,200 square meters. The main structure is a raised beam wooden frame, with grey bricks and tiles, horse head walls arranged in an orderly manner, and eaves that fly upwards, embodying the typical style of Jianghuai folk dwellings. The gate tower is exquisitely carved with stone, featuring inscriptions such as "Integrity and Filial Piety Passed Down the Family" and "Agriculture and Education as the Legacy of Generations," which highlight the family's cultural values. The courtyard is equipped with a courtyard, corridors, and flower windows, offering rich spatial layers and combining practicality with aesthetic value.

๐Ÿบ Cultural Relics

The existing cultural relics include:

  • A pair of Ming Dynasty stone lions (originally placed on either side of the main gate)
  • Three groups of Qing Dynasty colored painted wood carvings
  • Fragments of a family genealogy hand-copied manuscript (currently housed in the Dingyuan County Museum)
  • A "Yang Clan Ancestral Temple Stele" from the Qianlong period, standing in the western courtyard

It was listed as a Dingyuan County Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 2014 and included in the county-level intangible cultural heritage protection list in 2020.

๐ŸŒฟ Cultural Value

The Yang Mansion was not only a residence for the family but also served as a local private school and a place for local scholars to discuss affairs, carrying the Confucian ethical education and the tradition of local autonomy. Its architectural style, decorative patterns, family regulations, and other content are of great reference value for studying the social structure, clan system, and architectural art of the Ming and Qing dynasties in the eastern part of Anhui Province.
