Description

Yü Clan Ancestral Hall

📍 Address: County Road 077, Pujian County, Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province
🕰️ Historical Background:
Built during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty (1465), the Yü Clan Ancestral Hall is over 500 years old and one of the better-preserved ancestral halls from the Ming and Qing dynasties in the Pujian region. It has long served as a sacred site for ancestral worship and the transmission of family values among the local Yü clan. The hall bears witness to the rise and evolution of the Yü family throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties and stands as a significant physical testament to clan culture in central Zhejiang.

🏛️ Architectural Features:
Oriented southward with the mountain at its back, the hall features a meticulously planned layout based on a "three-section, five-bay" design, comprising an entrance gatehouse, front hall, main hall, and side wings. Constructed primarily using brick and wood, the building boasts upturned eaves and curved roof ridges, with intricate carved beams and painted decorations—especially the bracket sets and beam carvings in the main hall. The stone carving on the gatehouse reads “Yü Clan Ancestral Hall” in regular script, deeply incised with strong, elegant strokes that reflect classical elegance. More than ten Qing dynasty wooden plaques remain inside, recording family achievements, honors, and records of temple restoration, offering considerable historical value.

🏺 Cultural Relics and Interior Displays:
The hall houses several Qing-era ancestral tablets, handwritten copies of family genealogies, ritual bronze incense burners, and multiple calligraphic couplets promoting family precepts. Among them, the couplet “Loyalty and filial piety extend the family legacy; poetry and books ensure enduring heritage,” inscribed during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty, embodies Confucian ethical ideals. The main hall’s altar enshrines ancestral tablets of successive generations of the Yü family. Traditional sacrificial ceremonies are still held twice yearly during spring and autumn, preserving time-honored customs that continue to this day.

🌍 Cultural Significance:
Beyond symbolizing familial unity, the Yü Clan Ancestral Hall carries profound insights into the clan system, ritual culture, and local social structures of eastern Zhejiang. Designated a provincial cultural relic protection unit in 2013, it serves as a representative example for studying Jiangnan-style ancestral halls and family culture.
